THREE BRENHAM LIFEGUARDS HONORED FOR SAVING WOMAN’S LIFE

Three Brenham lifeguards have been honored by the City Council and American Red Cross for saving a woman’s life earlier this year.

Kevin Boggus, Tammy Jaster, and Kyler Roehling helped to save the life of Janci Droddy, who collapsed in the pool during a lifeguard training class at the Blue Bell Aquatic Center in March of 2016. The three lifeguards, along with Janci, were recognized during the Brenham City Council meeting on Thursday.lifeguardaward

Janci was climbing out of the pool after a lifeguard training exercise, when she suddenly fell face-first into the water.  Kevin and Tammy quickly realized that Janci was experiencing a seizure.  Kevin and Tammy approached Janci and held her head above water to ensure that she could breathe properly and not swallow water.  They waited for the seizure to subside before bringing her safely to the side and removing her from the pool.

Kyler called 9-1-1, and retrieved towels and a first aid kit in order to provide care to the victim.  Kyler, Kevin, and Tammy monitored Janci, ensuring that she maintained an open airway until EMS arrived.  Janci was transported to a nearby hospital for further care.

For this act, Kevin, Tammy, and Kyler have been awarded the American Red Cross Lifesaving Award, which is one of the highest awards given by the American Red Cross to an individual or team of individuals who saves or sustains a life by using skills and knowledge learned in an American Red Cross Preparedness and Health and Safety Services course.
