A Grimes County police chief has died suddenly.

Todd Mission Police Chief Johnny Martinez, died Wednesday afternoon in his office.  He was 53.

According to Grimes County Sheriff Don Sowell, Martinez was found at his desk just before 3 p.m.  Sowell says Martinez likely died from a medical episode,.

Martinez served as a patrolman, investigator, captain and chief deputy with the Grimes County Sheriff's Office. He also worked at the College Station Police Department.

Martinez worked as a reserve officer for the Todd Mission Police Department for about 10 years before taking over as police chief in 2015.

He oversaw security operations for the Texas Renaissance Festival, where he had worked for decades providing security.

Martinez was a 1992 graduate of the Texas A&M police academy.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

  1. I’ve known Chief Martinez for almost 25 years. He was a good man in every sense of the word. always willing to help in any way he could. He will be greatly missed and impossible to replace. Rest well Brother we got it from here.
