TOUGH SENTENCE FOR EVADING ARREST

A man well known to local law enforcement officers for his long history of criminal activity was sentenced to ten years in prison in this week’s session of the 21st district court.

District Court Judge Reva Towslee-Corbett ordered 38-year old Melvin Maurice Hogan of Old Washington to prison for ten years after he pled guilty to evading Brenham police.  The officers were trying to stop him because he was wanted him for an outstanding warrant.

Assistant District Attorney Eric Berg says Hogan led the officers on a chase, who called in tracking dogs to find him.  Once captured,  Hogan told the officers he ‘just didn’t want to go to jail.’ Berg says, Hogan’s criminal history  led to the harsh sentence.

Also sentenced in this week’s session of the court, was a 37-year old Brenham man who was found unconscious while at the wheel of his pickup truck in the 2400 block of Highway 290 on December 9th, 2011.

Eustorgio Perez was sentenced to five years in prison after he pled guilty to felony driving while intoxicated charges.

Brenham Police Officer Lance Weiss feared Perez was suffering from alcohol poisoning in the pre-dawn incident.  Weiss called the Washington County EMS because he was incapable of taking a field sobriety test.

Judge Corbett sentenced 34-year old Christopher Edward Carrington of Conroe to two years in prison after he pled guilty to snatching the purse of an elderly woman and using her checks. The Judge sentenced Carrington to two years for exploiting the elderly. Judge Corbett also sentenced  Carrington to ten months in a state jail for the forgery offense.
