Buccaneers succumb to Trinity Valley pressure and lose, 83-46

ATHENS, Texas – Blinn College women’s basketball committed way too many turnovers and led to easy baskets for Trinity Valley in a 83-46 victory over the Buccaneers Nov. 25 in Athens, Texas.

Trinity Valley applied full-court pressure for nearly the entire game and Blinn had a hard time holding on to the ball, giving Trinity Valley Community College a collection of easy buckets.

“We did not play very well,” said Blinn head coach Jeff Jenkins. “Trinity Valley is usually a tough place to play.”

The game didn’t start well for the Buccaneers in the first half as they trailed 45-16. Scoring was a little easier in the second half for Blinn but Trinity Valley was still able to extend its lead before the final buzzer.

Moe Bedford and Ashley Cherry each had nine points in the loss as the Buccaneers did not have a double-digit scorer. Katelynn Johnson also tallied eight points in a losing effort.

The full-court pressure of Trinity Valley served its purpose as Blinn had a hard time getting into its offense even after crossing half court. Coach Jenkins did like the effort of Cherry in the game and thought that she played well.

Blinn College will travel to McLennan Community College on Dec. 1 for a non-conference game starting at 5:30 p.m.

MEN

Buccaneers sluggish start to second half is reason for loss to Trinity Valley, 83-71

Blinn College men’s basketball had a hard time holding onto the basketball to begin the second half and Trinity Valley extended its lead and held on for an 83-71 victory Nov. 25 in Athens, Texas.

The Buccaneers suffered their first loss in conference but only trailed by three points at the half. Blinn went on a scoring drought in the first few minutes of the second half that proved costly.

Morris Dunnigan stepped up for Blinn and scored 17 points while Revey Norton and Lionheart Leslie each scored 14 points in the loss.

“Morris (Dunnigan) made some outside shots and played well,” said Blinn head coach Scott Schumacher. “What hurt us the most was not scoring for the first four or five minutes of the second half because they trapped and we didn’t handle it very well.”

Blinn did recover from their slow start after halftime and made the game close, getting within eight points down the stretch. Trinity Valley was able to slow down the offense though and kill a lot of clock on each possession to make it difficult for the Buccaneers to come back.

The loss is just the second on the season for Blinn College and their first inside the conference and moves their record to 1-1 in conference. The Buccaneers will next face Lone Star College – Cy-Fair on Nov. 29 in Brenham at 7:30 p.m.
