TWO SENTENCED FOR COPPER THEFTS AND EVIDENCE TAMPERING

“Drug induced opportunism’ is how Assistant District Attorney Eric Berg describes a brazen broad daylight theft of copper in August.

Two of the three suspects caught in the act of stealing copper at a gas plant on Quarry Road off Highway 36 north, were sentenced in this week’s session of the 21st district court.  Both were sentenced for stealing the copper and for tampering with the evidence.

Twenty-nine year old Tiffany Schroeder of Somerville and 23-year old  Starshine Guffee of Caldwell were given probated sentences for tampering with the evidence.  Berg said they were trying to dispose of the copper they had just stolen and possibly some illegal drugs. Both however will go to the Washington County jail for stealing the cooper.

Schroeder was sentenced to 22 days in the county jail for copper theft while  Starshine Guffee was sentenced to 54 days in jail.     Guffee was sentenced  to five years deferred adjudication, ordered to pay a $2000 fine, plus perform 200 hours of community service on the evidence tampering charge.  Schroeder was sentenced to five years probation for evidence tampering.

Workers at the plant caught them trying to steal the copper and other items when they came back from their lunch break on August 5th.  Sheriff Otto Hanak said the workers blocked Guffee and Schroeder with their vehicles.

In all, nine people pled guilty to felony charges in this week’s court session.

Judge Campbell revoked the probation of 25-year old James Edward Pennygraph III of Brenham.  Berg said Pennygraph had been sentenced to probation for drug possession in 2008.  Pennygraph repeated violated his probation, including other drug arrests and was ‘not a good probationer.’  Pennygraph must now spend the next five years in prison, pay a $1500 fine and court costs.

Twenty-six year old Chaka Chandanae Jones of Hempstead attempted to get some fraudulent prescriptions filled in August of last year.  The pharmacist caught on and reported her to the police.  Judge Campbell sentenced her to ten years probation, a $1500 fine and court cost.  She must also  perform 250 hours of community service, and successful complete an intermediate sanction facility program for a year.  Berg said Jones has been shown to have an ongoing drug problem.

Eighteen year old Lachristian Devon Hall of Brenham was caught stealing cattle in June.  Judge Campbell sentenced Hall to five years deferred adjudication, a $1000 fine, and make $1258 in restitution.  This was one of many cattle theft cases the Washington County Sheriff’s office handled with the help of the Texas Rangers and the Southwest Cattlemen’s Association in recent months.

Twenty-seven year old Joshua Caleb Rivas of Sugarland was caught with 1.7 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop in June.  Berg said Rivas tried to tell a law enforcement officer he was just trying to throw away some trash but, unknown to him, there was marijuana in that trash.  Judge Campbell sentenced him to three years deferred adjudication.

Corea Shawnta Mosley was sentenced to four years probation for driving while intoxicated with a child passenger during the Thanksgiving weekend last year.

Forty-six year old Sam Ronald Hudgeons of Brenham was sentenced to two years deferred adjudication  and a $1500 fine for possession methamphetamines in October of last year.  He must also perform 120 hours of community service.
