TxDOT SETS OPEN HOUSE FOR WORK ON SH36

An open house to discuss planned TxDOT work on Highway 36 is planned for Thursday, December 12th at Brenham Elementary School.

TxDOT staff will display the plans that will affect Highway 36 from West Main to North Park St.

Plans are to make that stretch of 36 around Brenham, into a 4-lane divided highway, if and when the funding becomes available.

Officials with TxDOT say that stretch of highway has seen a number of accidents in recent years—some fatal.

In July, TxDOT activated a traffic light at 36 and FM-577, and construction has begun on reconfiguration of the Highway 36 and Business 36 intersection near Hohlt park.

TxDOT engineer Mark Shafer says the project is #2 on the state’s overall transportation plan.

No timetable has been set for the project, pending funding.  The expected price tag for the project is $16-million.

The public is invited to view the plans and ask questions of the staff between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.

No formal presentation is planned.  Attendees may come and go at their convenience.

For more information, contact the local TxDOT office at (979) 778-9675.

  1. TxDot took the light away at 577 and 290 so people can drive 60-65 mph to then either bottle neck at the clover leaf, stop dead at the light at Westwood or stop dead at the light at 577 and 36. None of this has been thought out very well. So pretty soon, if you want to come in from Somerville, you will have to stop at two red lights within 1 mile of each other. How in the world does this help the flow of traffic? I agree that something needs to be done at 36/Hohlt park but a light?? I think flyovers should just bypass us all together!

  2. Then we should take the traffic light out of the intersection, design in on/off ramps flyovers if needed to keep traffic flowing instead of forcing everyone to stop a light. We used to advertise being the perfect hub for business and trucking and now we are making it a pain to come through here.
