TXDOT WARNS OF DRIVING NEAR OIL DRILLING

Oil drilling in the Brazos Valley is booming, and while that may mean good news for the state and area economy the Texas Department of Transportation has concerns about driving near the drilling.

A report from TxDot says they have seen an increase in the number of fatality and serious injury crashes in the Eagle Ford Shale oil discovery that stretches from Laredo in South Texas up to the Brazos Valley.

The department has launched a public service campaign to alert drivers to use extra caution when driving through these drilling work zones.

The campaign is called “Be Safe, Drive Smart.” It strongly encourages drivers to use additional caution in oil exploration zones where derricks are going up rapidly.

The report says that ‘anytime you have growth you have hurdles and obstacles, 18-wheelers, sometimes they can’t see you.

Last year over 3400 crashes were reported in the Eagle Ford Shale region.

Bob Colwell of the Bryan office of TxDot says they saw 236 fatal crashes last year and thinks that is in part due to the oil boom.
