UNEMPLOYMENT UP IN WASHINGTON COUNTY

  

Washington County’s unemployment rate increased during the month of June, after showing a decline in each of the past two months.

The county jobless rate for June was 4.8 percent, which is an increase of 5-tenths of a percent, from 4.3 percent in May.  The current rate is still drastically lower than this same time last year, when the rate stood at 5.7 percent.

Washington County’s June labor force was 14,788, with 708 unemployed, according to the Texas Workforce Commission.

The state’s unemployment rate dropped to 4.6 percent in June, down 2-tenths from May.  It is the second straight month of declines.

According to labor officials, the national unemployment rate in June was 4.4 percent.

Amarillo and the Austin-Round Rock area had the lowest unemployment in Texas last month at 3.4 percent. The McAllen-Edinburg-Mission area had the highest jobless rate for Texas during June at 8.3 percent.

June jobless rates for surrounding counties:  Austin County, 4.8 percent—up one-tenth;  Brazos County, 3.7 percent—up seven-tenths;  Burleson County, 4.7 percent—up six-tenths;  Fayette County, 3.4 percent—up one-tenth;  Grimes County, 6.1 percent—up four-tenths;  Lee County, 3.7 percent—up two-tenths;  And, Waller County, 5.6 percent—up six tenths.
