UNLICENSED CARRY BILL CLEARS STATE HOUSE COMMITTEE

A proposal allowing Texans to openly carry handguns without permits is eligible for a Texas House floor vote.

A House committee Tuesday approved the bill by Republican Rep. James White of Hillister. Backers of the 2nd Amendment call the issue "constitutional carry."

The committee passed a modified version of White's proposal, which would have allowed virtually any Texan 18 or older to openly carry handguns.

It now mandates guns be holstered. Those carrying without licenses also still must meet some requirements for obtaining licenses, including being at least 21 and without prior felony convictions.

Last session, Texas approved open carry of handguns, but only for Texans with concealed carry licenses.

  1. Lisa, if I didn’t have this gun, the king of England could walk right in here and start pushing you around. D’you want that? Huh? Do ya?

  2. Cat Lover is correct in almost everything stated….except the bit about law enforcement. The men and women in blue respect weapons and in general, do not go out of their way to bother someone carrying one. Open carry, conceal carry…..whatever, it’s basically the same.

I disagree with everything Mr. Schlottman said above. I’ve been shooting guns since I was in single digits. My father and grandfather made me very aware of the proper care and respect one must use when handling a firearm. That was much better than any class I could ever take.
The notion that open carry will lead to trouble is completely false. It’s not the ones that obey the laws we need to be worried about; these are the ones who need to be carrying for their own safety and the safety of others. Guns don’t kill any more than standing in a garage makes you a car. It’s really quite simple-bad guys are bad guys and they always will be…..the law doesn’t stop them, it merely attempts to punish them once they get caught, and they always do.

Ad that’s the way it looks to this Chappell Hill Resident.

    1. I agree Chappell Hill, the cities and states that have the strictest laws have the most gun violence. The crooks do not care about Laws because they are crooks!

  3. Police officers are already mistakingly killing people out of fear for their own lives during “routine” traffic cops, simply because they assume the person has a gun. Now, they’re really gonna be killing people cause now ANYONE can have a gone; licensed or not… This second amendment law will be the catalyst of our own self destruction. Foreign powers don’t have to kill us; we’ll destroy ourselves.

  4. This law has been a long time coming, truth is the people that are included in this new law have been carrying one way or another, so “What’s the point?” The one thing that bothers me is I fear how much hassle the law enforcement officials will dole out b/c of this new law. I certainly respect the laws, but they can be a bit mush 80% of the time. I carry mine on my right hip in a Fobus holster, and I hope I never have to pull it, if in fact I ever do have to use it, it will by the rules…to the letter.

  5. This is just a bad idea on so many levels. If you are going to carry, you need to have passed the gun safety class and instruction. 2nd amendment or not this is going to lead to nothing but trouble.
