U.S. Congressman Steve Scalise

US Rep. Steve Scalise has been shot in Alexandria, Virginia, this morning.

Witnesses say he was on deck at a practice for the congressional baseball tem when the shooting occurred.

Scalise (R-LA), the majority whip, appeared to have been shot in the hip and it appeared two Capitol Hill police agents were also shot.

Witnesses said the shooter appeared to be a white male but the shooter was behind the third base dugout and didn't say anything.

Alexandria police said earlier Wednesday they were responding to a "multiple shooting" in the city. The tweet also said the suspect is in custody.

Update: 10:10am

The shooter's identity has been confirmed as James Hodgkinson, a 66 year old white man out of Belleville, Illinois. His condition is described as "serious," as he was injured when Capitol Police returned fire as Hodgkinson charged the field according to reports.

The aid for Williams is being identified as Zach Barth.

Update: 8:30am

As details emerge, injuries have been confirmed for Scalise as being shot in the hip. Other injuries include a staff member for Rep. Roger Williams R-TX, as well as a two security staff members or Capitol police.

Witnesses estimate 50 to 100 shots being fired, and Capitol police returned fire to the suspect despite injury. No other people in the park were armed.

The Representatives and Congressmen ran to aid Scalise, including Congressman Brad Wenstrup, a physician from Ohio who was able to assist in minimalizing blood loss.
