VALMONT INDUSTRIES TO LAY OFF 160 WORKERS

A long-time employer in Brenham, Valmont Industries has announced that they will be laying off 160 workers, or 40 percent of their workforce due to a downturn in business.

Currently, the company has 369 people at its Brenham plant. The company is based in Omaha, Nebraska.

The company recently notified the workers through the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) of the layoffs. The Act required employers with 100 employees or more to be notified at least 60 days in advance of layoffs or plant closings.

According to Page Michel, president and CEO of the EDF, some of the laid off worker may possibly be offered jobs at other Valmont facilities, including the plant in Bellville.

Workers will also be able to make use of Workforce Solutions and the Blinn Technical Center to organize a job fair to help displaced workers to join other companies.

Valmont’s Board of Directors are planning a restructuring plan that involves the consolidation of operations and other cost-cutting measures.

In March, Valmont had received a tax abatement from Brenham and Washington County for the plant for site improvement, to construct a new facility, and to purchase new machinery and equipment, and also to buy additional property in the Southwest Industrial Park.

  1. The problem is that a lot of local business are oil field related with inflated wages that’s one problem the other is over inflated property values. Yep you wanted people to come here and buy your over inflated property now it’s going to hurt for a while. I’m in same boat!

  2. Brenham has always been below pay scale of other towns. Having 3 major companies in our town should bring people here, but the fact still remains that you can’t make a living g in Brenham unless you have a family business given to you or know someone in a company that will hire you or have “old family” land or money.

  3. You would think that a city like Brenham, the location of it, between 2 major cities, would have companies that are stable, and offer a decent salary! No such luck! Can’t even get competition for our 1 major chain grocery store here! But if you want Mexican food, pizza, or chicken, your in luck!!! Good luck to the valmont employes! Get ready to drive to a surrounding city to get good paying work!

    1. Well citizen, the explanation is this: Other industries that would hire a large number of persons for more than the average local rate need a good deal offered to them from our local Industrial Board, that is required for prudent business growth. But that would take labor from other long time locally owned business, or pressure them to reduce profits by raising their workers wages. That will not happen, and that is why we have this “situation” for to many decades.

      1. Well maybe its time some of those Old born in Brenham get knock off
there perch. The town is stagnant, Until move out some of the old hot
air will remain that way. Praying will not help, you need to replace
what is holding this town back. Don’t support the old school

  4. I am from Brenham and it is so sad. I pray all things work out for the good of all parties and families. You see this in other states and one never think this would happen in their hometown. Prayers going out
