VOTER I.D. LAW IN FRONT OF JUDGE TODAY

Texas officials are asking federal appeals judges in New Orleans to let the state's latest voter ID law take effect.

Today’s (hearing at the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals centers on a law re-worked in May by the Texas Legislature after years of court battles. The new version allows residents who don't have an acceptable photo ID to vote by signing an affidavit stating they cannot reasonably obtain one.

The same federal judge who blocked the 2011 version of the law blocked the re-worked version in August.

She said the law still requires IDs more likely to be possessed by white voters than Latinos or African-Americans. She also said criminal penalties for lying on the affidavit could scare away voters fearful of making an innocent mistake on the form.

  1. How do these people do any business without a valid drivers license? ?? I show mine at least 3 times a week for banking, buying and such.

    1. I have a valid d.l. and carry it always. I work full-time, own and manage property, and travel frequently throughout Texas, yet I can’t remember the last time I was asked to show it. Guess if you don’t ever do certain things (drink, speed, borrow $), you don’t really need to show it.

  2. Why don’t these organizations that want to “Get Out the Vote” do something to help these people obtain the necessary documents to obtain an ID? Rather than complain about how racial or discriminatory it is, organize transportation for those who need to go obtain their ID’s or set up a hotline to help those who don’t know what to do. Rather than complain, DO something.

    1. Come up with a plan. A go fund me page? These documents are not free, obtaining them from another country could be impossible. Maybe lawyers need to volunteer to assist in filling out forms.
