WASHINGTON CO. BEER CLUB HOSTS CASK TAPPING

Home Sweet Farm Market & Biergarten and the Zythological Society of North America played host to a historical event in Washington County beer history recently.

Brazos Valley Brewing Company provided a cask of Holy Crow American Stout that was tapped for a public tasting. “This was an event which may not have been seen in Washington County in the last 100 years" says Josh Hyatt, the president of the Zythological Society of North America.

A cask is special due to the unique process of transferring unfiltered beer into it. The cask then undergoes a final fermentation and aging process. It is tapped and then dispensed without the aid of additional Co2 like a regular keg. This allows air to enter the cask when dispensing the beer which results in a product that must be used within 24-48 hours to avoid spoilage. The cask provided was in a size commonly referred to as a "firkin". Casks were the standard dispensing system for the world until the modern era.

Brad and Jenny Stufflebeam provided the host site at Home Sweet Farm Market & Biergarten, which is located in downtown Brenham and features local food, craft beer, and live music with a family friendly atmosphere.

Brazos Valley Brewing Company, located in downtown Brenham, TX, provided the special beer for the tasting event. They are an independent craft brewery founded in 2013 by a group of family and friends who aim to create the highest quality beer and have a great time doing it.

The Zythological Society of North America is a group that strives to promote the responsible enjoyment of beer as well as educate themselves and the community about all aspects of beer and beer culture.

They meet the first Tuesday of each month at various locations for beer tasting and education. The society is open to new members and invites those who want to learn more about craft beer and promote responsible beer consumption to their next meeting March 7th, 2017 at 96 West for another special beer event.

  1. If you are on Facebook, you can search under: Zythological Society of North America, Texas Chapter. You will see the link to the group and you can join the Brenham beer club (It’s a public group). After that you will be able to see when and where the next meeting occurs. Generally it’s on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm. $10 a meeting buys two craft beers to enjoy and discuss at each meeting. Majority of the time they meet at Home Sweet Farm but also go and visit other venues.
