One of Washington County’s most unique characters and civic leaders has died. Dr. Allen Commander died Sunday in a nursing home after a lengthy illness.

The 86 year old Commander was well known for his deep booming voice, and for his acting flair in portraying Texas heroes like Sam Houston.  Commander, a former professor at the University of Houston, was actively involved with many local civic causes, and was especially fond of Washington on the Brazos State Park and the Star of the Republic Museum.  He was a member of the Washington County Council, the Arts Council, and the Baptist Men’s Association, and was a big supporter of local law enforcement.
