WASHINGTON COUNTY DEPUTY HONORED AT STAR OF TEXAS AWARDS

  

A Washington County Deputy who lost his life in a traffic accident will be honored by the State of Texas today (Monday) at the Star of Texas Awards.

9/14/12 Ralph Barrera/American-Statesman; Texas Governor Rick Perry gave remarks and presented the 2012 Star of Texas Awards, which honor peace officers. firefighters, emergency medical first responders and federal law enforcement agents that have been seriously injured or killed inn the line of duty, during a ceremony in the House Chambers Friday morning. Austin Police Sergeant Jennifer Stephenson, who was seriously injured on the job, received her Star Award today. (feature only)

In 2006, Don Wass, 35, of Bellville died in a car accident on Highway 36 South in Austin County as he was reporting for duty. He was a nearly 10-year veteran of the Sheriff’s office. Lt. Dan Houston, of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, submitted Wass’ name for the awards ceremony.

The Star of Texas Awards honors all Texas officers, firefighters, and emergency medical first responders who are killed or seriously hurt in the line of duty.  The award was created in 2003 when the State of Texas passed a house bill which encouraged the commemoration of first responders and their selfless commitment to serve.
