WASHINGTON COUNTY READ RECEPTION THURSDAY

Lifetime Learning will host the 9th annual “Washington County READ” reception this Thursday at Unity Theater in Brenham.

Paulette Jiles, author of “News of the World”, will be on hand to discuss the book Thursday evening during the reception, which begins at 5:30.  Actors from Unity Theater will do a dramatic reading from “News of the World”, which was chosen by the Washington County Read committee as the book for everyone in the county to read this year.  The book, set in the late 1800’s, tells the story of the dangerous journey undertaken by Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a 71 year old widower and veteran of three wars.  Kidd is paid a fifty dollar gold piece to make the 400 mile journey from North Texas to San Antonio to return a 10 year old girl to her relatives.  Johanna was recently rescued from the Kiowa Indians who had kidnapped her years earlier, and now she is more Indian than Texan.  The story follows the two as their tenuous relationship evolves as they face the perils of their journey across Texas.  Along the way, Captain Kidd earns money by reading the news to crowds of people from newspapers from around the world.

The honorary chairs for the 2017 READ are two people who bring the news to Brenham and Washington County.  Tom Whitehead, President and General Manager of radio stations KTTX and KWHI, and Arthur Hahn, managing editor of the Brenham Banner Press.

“News of the World” is available at the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library, Blinn College Library, Book Nook and as an e-book.  The Washington County READ Committee is also available for book reviews for an organization or club who would like one.  Call 979-353-1089 to set up a book review.  Thursday evening’s reception at Unity Theater is free and open to the public to attend, beginning at 5:30.

Sponsors of the READ are Unity Theater, KTEX 106 and KWHI 1280, The Banner Press, Washington County Chamber of Commerce, Nancy Carol Roberts Library, Blinn College and Brenham ISD.

Members of the Washington County READ Committee will be our guests this (Tuesday) morning on the “Community Corner” show on KWHI at 9:05.
