Washington County Sheriff Otto Hanak has announced he is running for re-election in 2016

“I am honored and humbled with the support and trust bestowed upon me by the voters of Washington County,” stated Washington County Sheriff Otto Hanak.  Hanak,  and will be unopposed in the 2016 election cycle after having been sworn in as the county’s 27th Sheriff in 2013.  “Our Sheriff’s Office has solved major crimes, focused on being more visible and responsive and worked with limited resources as we cover over 600 square miles to ensure everyone’s property and public safety is well preserved.  I look forward to working with everyone throughout Washington County as we continue seeing significant growth, high criminal traffic through our county and the challenges of living near the 4th largest city in the country (Houston).  As we continue implementing the best strategies and programs in our county to ensure everyone’s safety, I welcome everyone’s input, involvement and support.  We must get back to basics in fighting crime and be ahead of the criminal activity as we preserve our quality of life,” concluded Hanak.

Hanak’s law enforcement career has covered more than 37 years with his last two duties being a Texas Ranger assigned to Washington County and as the District Attorney's Investigator, assigned to the 21st Judicial District of Texas.  At the national level, Sheriff Hanak served on the Executive Security-Protective Detail for the George W. Bush Presidential Campaign.  He also provided executive security for in-state and out-of-state dignitaries for more than 15 years.

Sheriff Hanak's formal education was at Sam Houston State University, majoring in Criminal Justice.  His professional education includes more than 4,300 training hours in various law enforcement training programs.

Sheriff Hanak is also charged with the collection and the analysis of data of all Sheriff's activities, prepares and administers capital and operating budgets as approved by the Washington County Commissioner's Court. Sheriff Hanak is part of the Washington County /Brenham Emergency Management Group and serves as the Incident Commander during the times of heightened emergencies, when occurring in Washington County.

Sheriff Hanak manages command supervisors who are responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of its units and divisions. Sheriff Hanak carries out supervisory responsibilities twenty-four hours a day and seven day a week, in accordance with State and Federal Law, and County policy and procedures.

Sheriff Hanak is responsible for the interviewing, hiring, and the training of all civilian employees and peace officers working under his direction. Additionally, he is responsible for overseeing the county’s largest liability, the Washington County Jail.

Sheriff Hanak would like to thank all the citizens that have displayed their support for his goal to provide the best and most professional law enforcement and correctional service our tax dollars can buy.
