WASHINGTON COUNTY VOTERS LARGELY AGREE WITH STATE VOTERS

Washington County voters voted for governor, comptroller, attorney general and lieutenant governor as did the rest of the state Tuesday.   For the most part, county voters agreed, but with some differences.

Republicans statewide nominated Attorney General Gregg Abbott to be the next governor of Texas while the Democrats nominated State Senator Wendy Davis for governor.  They won overwhelmingly statewide and in Washington County.

There was close race on the Democratic side for U.S. Senator.  While the Texas Secretary of State’ office had Dallas area dental businessman with 48.6 percent, the Associated Press has declared him the outright winner over his closest opponent, Lyndon LaRouche supporter Kesha Rogers, whom state Democratic leaders openly opposed. Now that 100 percent of the votes have been counted in that race, Texas Secretary of State's office has declared a runoff between Alameel and Rogers.  Washington County voters gave Alameel 42 percent of the vote. On the Republican side incumbent John Cornyn easily won re-renomination both state wide and in Washington County.

Statewide there will be a runoff between State Comptroller Glen Hegar of Katy and former Uvalde State Rep.  Harvey Hildebrand.  Statewide Hegar has 49 percent of the vote while Hildebrand had had 28 percent.  They will be in a May 27th runoff.  Washington County voters however, wanted their State Senator to become comptroller by a wide margin.  In the local vote, Hegar had 72 percent of the vote.

Houston area State Senator Dan Patrick is in the runoff with incumbent Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst.  Patrick  had 43 percent of the Republican vote while Dewhurst has 27 percent of the vote.  Washington County voters supported Patrick with 45 percent of the vote and Dewhurst getting 25 percent of the vote.

Whoever wins that race will face San Antonio State Senator Leticia Van De Putte.  The Washington County figures had that race roughly the same.

Ken Paxton and Dan Branch are in a runoff for Attorney General.  Washington County voters concurred.

Now the runoff is set for May 27th.
