WELLBROCK NAMED UofH TOP MALE ATHLETE

Former Brenham Cub and current University of Houston Cougar pitcher Chase Wellbrock has been named 2014 Male Cougar Athlete of the year.

Wellbrock was honored at the recent Senior Awards Ceremony for his career contributions in both the classroom and in competition.

Wellbrock currently holds the Cougar all-time saves record with 22.  He is also the first Cougar in history to record over 10 saves in back-to-back seasons.

In April, Chase was named to the Stopper of the Year-Midseason Watch List

He is currently ranked 2nd in conference and is one of the nation’s best with an ERA of 0.58 with 17 appearances. The right-hander holds a record of 3-0 with 10 saves and has struck out 29 in 31 innings this season, while walking just four – two of which have been intentional walks.

He is graduating with honors this week with a degree is Sports Administration and a minor in Heath Development and Consumer Sciences.

Chase is the son of Kenny and Sandy Wellbrock of Brenham.
