WOMAN ARRESTED TRYING TO CASH FORGED CHECK

A Temple woman was arrested Thursday in Bryan after authorities say she tried to cash a forged $200 check made out to televangelist Billy Graham

According to police, 30-year old Holly May Hooker possessed a check that belonged to an 81-year old woman originally written out to “Billy Graham Evangelistic.”

The original subject line appeared to have been erased and replaced with “Holly Hooker Evangelistic Grace.”

A bank teller at Prosperity Bank on Texas Avenue told police that the check appeared to have been tampered with and contacted her supervisor, who notified police.

The check’s owner told police that she wrote the check on December 23rd, and placed the check in the outgoing mail in the next morning on Christmas Eve, according to court documents.

Because the fraud victim is elderly, Hooker’s financial forgery charge was upgrade to a third-degree felony and is being held on &8,000 bond. The crime is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $10,000
