114 DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS REMEMBERED

It was time last (Tuesday) night to remember the 114 women and girls in Texas who died at the hands of the men they believed loved and cared for them last year, during the 12th annual Candlelight Vigil for victims of domestic violence at the Blinn College Student Center.

The Washington County Victim’s Task Force sponsors this vigil each year to raise awareness of domestic violence.

Washington County Sheriff’s deputy Kyle Kokemoor read out the grim statistics for the state for the year 2012.  The figures recorded 114 women and girls died in domestic violence incidents, no men.  State law enforcement officers answered nearly 12,000 domestic violence calls.

Some of the stories of these victims were read during the vigil.  Assistant District Attorney Lauren Haevischer told the story of ‘Fran’ who endured an abusive relationship from the age of 15.  She was threatened, beatened and forcibly rape, until she found the courage to leave.

A candle was lit, then extinguished for each of the fatal victims of domestic violence in Texas last year,

A sign of hope concluded the vigil as balloons were released to raise up the victims.
