Jenni Liu records season-high 41 assists and 17 digs

WHARTON, Texas — With the help of freshman setter Jenni Liu’s season-high 41 assists and  17 digs in Tuesday night’s match, the No. 19 Blinn College volleyball team (4-0) defeated Wharton County Junior College, 3-1 (25-10, 25-16, 23-25, 25-22).

“It was a match of two halves because we played good the first two sets and made a lot of errors in the last two,” said Terry Gamble, Blinn head coach. “I give Wharton credit for playing hard. It was nice to get the win.”

Giulia Hortelan led Blinn’s offense with 16 kills, while Essence Clerkley followed with 10 and Tamia Hall recorded eight. Liu and Kaitlyn Pollard also helped out on offense, serving three aces each.

Defense with strong as Hortelan followed Liu with 13 digs and Chloe Mullins tallied 12.

Defense led Blinn to an easy 25-10 win in the first set. The Buccaneers kept the momentum rolling into the second set to take a 25-16 victory and lead the match 2-0. However, Wharton avoided the sweep with a 25-23 win in the third set. Although Blinn and Wharton played a close fourth set, the Buccaneers sealed a 25-22 victory to finish off the Pioneers.

Next, Blinn will play North Lake College in its home opener at the Kruse Center on Wednesday, August 28, at 6 p.m.
