#20 BUC FOOTBALL FALLS TO CISCO, 47-44

Brock Landis and Trea Shropshire connect on three touchdown passes for the Bucs

BRENHAM, Texas — No. 20 Blinn College football came up just short in a conference shootout, falling to Cisco College, 47-44, on Saturday night at Cub Stadium.

Blinn and Cisco exchanged the lead several times before the Buccaneers evened the score 44-44 on a 59-yard pass that Brock Landis sent to Trea Shropshire with 3:34 left in the game. After the defense stopped Cisco, Blinn fumbled the ball which allowed the Wranglers to score on a 16-yard field goal in the final second to win 47-44.

“You can’t win football games when you turn the ball over, but our guys played their hearts out tonight and put in the effort,” said Ryan Mahon, Blinn head coach. You have to give credit to Cisco because they are a good football team.”

Landis was incredible in the pocket, completing 25 of 43 passes for 326 yards and six touchdowns. His top-two receivers were Shropshire, who had six catches for 201 yards and three touchdowns, and Xavier Hutchinson, who had eight catches for 52 yards and two touchdowns.

Cisco took a 13-0 lead after taking advantage of a couple of early miscues by Blinn. After recovering a Blinn fumble in the first quarter, the Wranglers were able to use the next few plays to get the ball into the end zone on a two-yard rushing touchdown to take a 7-0 lead with 6:24 on the clock. Then, with 4:43 remaining in the opening quarter, the Wranglers blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown.

Blinn landed on the board with 2:35 remaining in the opening quarter on a 32-yard touchdown pass from Landis to Hutchinson for the Buccaneers to trail 13-7. Following Cisco’s 22-yard field goal with 12:47 showing in the second quarter, Landis and Shropshire connected for a 51-yard touchdown pass for Blinn to trail 16-14 with 8:42 left until the half.

Blinn finally took a 21-16 lead when Landis and Shropshire connected for a 40-yard touchdown pass with 7:16 showing in the second quarter. Cisco hurried to score on a 10-yard rushing touchdown to lead 23-21 with 1:58 left in the second quarter and held onto it at the half.

Cisco and Blinn swapped leads throughout the entire third quarter. With 10:54 on the clock, Landis sent a 15-yard touchdown pass into the hands of Hutchinson for the Buccaneers to pull back ahead 28-23. Cisco was able to jump back ahead on a 72-yard rushing touchdown to lead 30-28 with 7:17 left. With 3:24 remaining, Schroeder kicked a 19-yard field goal for Blinn to move ahead 31-30. Blinn didn’t stay ahead long as Cisco scored on a 70-yard touchdown pass to lead 36-31 with 1:56 remaining. With 1:06 left, Landis delivered a 34-yard touchdown pass to CJ Jones for the Buccaneers to lead 37-36 heading into the final quarter.

Ben Langston got things rolling for Blinn in the final quarter with an interception in the end zone when Cisco was just four yards out. However, Cisco got the ball back to score on a three-yard touchdown pass with 4:30 left to go to lead 44-37. That is when Landis moved quickly to find Shropshire in the end zone to even the score 44-44 before Cisco scored on a final-second field goal for the win.

Next, Blinn will travel to compete against No. 5 Kilgore College on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 3 p.m.
