BRAZOS CO. DETENTION CENTER INMATE DIES IN CUSTODY

Investigation is underway into the in-custody death of a Hearne man in Brazos County.

According to the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office, 44-year-old Terrance D’Shawn Hammond was transported around 8:30 a.m. Friday from the Brazos County Detention Center to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bryan after jail staff said he appeared to be in medical distress.  He was pronounced dead at the hospital just before 9 a.m.

The sheriff’s office said staff conducted a check on Hammond shortly before 8 a.m.  Medical staff at the jail evaluated him and immediately began lifesaving efforts.  After 911 was called, Bryan EMS arrived, conducted an evaluation and transported him to the hospital, where he later died.

Hammond was initially arrested by College Station police around 11:30 p.m. Thursday.  The sheriff’s office said he was accepted at the jail at 1:15 a.m. Friday and was being admitted on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance, a Travis County warrant for Child Support, Failure to Identify as a Fugitive Giving False or Fictitious Information and a Brazos County warrant on the same charge.

The Texas Jail Commission has been notified.  A custodial death report will be provided to the Texas Attorney General following an internal investigation by the sheriff’s office and an independent investigation by the Texas Rangers.

  1. Don’t be so quick to imply the staff did something wrong. We don’t even know what
the man died from. If there was misconduct, the Texas Rangers will find out when they investigate.

  2. So the people investigating are investigating themselves? The police had custody and the police are investigating themselves. I’m sure they will be cleared of any wrongdoing.

    1. PLEASE LOOK AT HIS PRIERS. He is a criminal.without our police officers there would be chaos in the streets. Our police officers have a thankless job. Not to mention they put there lives on the line everyday even for you. Still sad that the man passed. Might even be by his own doing sad to say.

      1. Sounds like you are saying that just because he charged with a crime, he deserved to die?! That is disgusting. I hardly think the streets would be anarchy and chaos, as you say, if someone who has failed to pay child support and in alleged possession of a controlled substance isn’t dead in jail.

This person did not deserve to die.

      2. This young man was my cousin. He lost his mother less than a year ago, but it doesn’t matter what he did or didn’t do, it need to be investated. All lives matter period!

      3. As a criminal addiction specialist it is a known fact that anyone with controlled substance in there possession could end up in distress at some point. I would encourage you to understand that many individuals have criminal issues with addictions. I bet you have someone in you life that could be addicted to coffee, food, sugar, beer, see, etc. What your jugement. Life is precious.

    2. Perhaps a re-read of the last sentence may be beneficial? The Rangers will be providing an additional, independent investigation. The family of the inmate may, of course, hire someone for an additional investigation. But, just out of curiosity, whom would you suggest conduct the investigation?

    3. The Texas Rangers conduct the investigation. An autopsy will be ordered so we will know if he swallowed his product and died from it.
