BRENHAM ISD HIRING FIREFIGHTERS TO MONITOR HIGH SCHOOL WHILE FIRE ALARMS NOT WORKING CORRECTLY

A problem with the fire alarm system at Brenham High School has caused Brenham ISD to have to hire firefighters to walk the halls to remain in compliance with fire code.

According to Brenham ISD Communications Specialist Brooke Trahan, the two firefighters are paid $900 in total a day to perform the fire watch, which started after an instance in April where the fire alarm went off and staff could not determine what triggered it.

Trahan said an inspection was performed by the fire marshal on April 28th at the request of the high school principal.  Once the issue with the alarm was discovered, the school instituted a fire watch on the 29th, bringing in the firefighters to walk through the building and ensure continued surveillance and compliance with National Fire Protection Association Life Safety Code.

According to Trahan, the two firefighters are each paid $45 an hour and run a schedule of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The rate is set by the fire marshal, and the school is required per the fire marshal’s standard to have two firefighters on fire watch when the school is fully occupied.

Trahan said the longer wait time to fix the system was due to the need for specialized parts and a contractor with a particular license to install them.  She noted that the system has still been operational, but not to its fullest extent.

Trahan said the parts should be in by the end of next week, and should be installed in two to three days, before the start of summer school.

  1. For one, maintenance does not have someone who can work on a fire alarm system! So to get someone to come and work on it, takes time and than to order parts: don’t happen in the instant, that someone of you think!!

  2. Really. I do think whom ever is running this city and county needs to be voted out. Like the county rental of the fair grounds to at $45,000 per year. Now. To watch the school for $900 per day. Come on now. You all going fine this????

    1. Really. Neither entity you mentioned has anything to do with this. Complain correctly at least.

  3. Guess we need to build a new high school now.

Good Maintenance can save lots of money keeping up with it and fixed it before it’s a big problem.

Why is it taking this long to fix it amd why are we now just hearing about?

    1. This is the plan B have firefighters walk the halls @ almost a grand per day. Does not take a professional to spot a fire and operate a fire extinguisher for that, price you could have an off duty police officer or two so you have added security with their presence.
