A Brenham police captain was honored Thursday for his many years of service to the Brenham Police Department.

Captain Lloyd Powell was recognized by the Brenham City Council for 25 years with the department.  He was also presented a meritorious service medal by Police Chief Ron Parker.

Parker said the meritorious service medal is rarely awarded, but Powell is well-deserving.

Parker said Powell has “served with special dedication and exceptional service in a variety of assignments.”  He added that he has “distinguished himself as a leader in charge of various projects that have been instrumental in providing assistance, service and safety for our city and our citizens.”

Sworn in to the Brenham Police Department on August 11, 1997, Powell served as a detective from January 2001 to January 2011.  He was promoted to sergeant in November 2011 and appointed as captain in August 2015.  He recently assumed command of two divisions, those being the operations division and support services division, and now serves as second in command of the department.

Powell was honored as police officer of the year in 2000 and 2007.  He also received a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) academic recognition award in 1999.  He has also been an active volunteer with Brenham NEXT, Champion Fellowship Church and the Washington County Rotary Club, and has served on the board of directors for Brenham NEXT and the Washington County Chamber of Commerce.

Powell said it has been “an honor to serve this city for the past 25 years and a bigger honor to serve alongside some of the greatest men and women that I’ve ever met.”
