As we enter severe weather season, Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar reminds Texans about the upcoming tax-free holiday.

Texans will be able to purchase certain items tax-free to be used for emergency preparation supplies.

The holiday weekend begins at 12:01am on Saturday, April 23, and ends at midnight at Monday, April 25.

Items you can purchase include: household batteries, fuel containers, and flashlights priced less than $75; hurricane shutters and emergency ladders priced at less than $300; and portable generators at less than $3,000.

Items that do not qualify include: batteries for automobiles, boats, and other motorized vehicles; camping stoves and camping supplies; chainsaws, plywood, extension ladders and stepladders, and tents.

Please note that for on-line purchases, the delivery, shipping, handling, and transportation charges are considered part of the sales price.

The Comptroller’s office estimates that shoppers will save more than $1.5 million in state and local sales taxes during the tax holiday, which was approved by the Texas Legislature in 2015.

A complete list of emergency preparation supplies that may be purchased tax-free can be found on the Comptroller’s website.
