ABBOTT/DAVIS SQUARE OFF IN FINAL DEBATE

Wendy Davis and Greg Abbott clashed over ethics in a combative final debate Tuesday, heard live on KWHI.

During the clash in a Dallas TV studio, both candidates suggested their opponent might be too corrupt to be governor.

Davis, who trails in the polls, seized on an independent audit of the problem-riddled Texas Enterprise Fund. The state auditor revealed last week that the fund gave $222 million to entities that never filed formal applications or promised specific job-creation targets.

Abbott, the three-term Republican attorney general, has received at least $1.4 million in campaign contributions from beneficiaries of the fund.

Abbott fired back, accusing Davis of benefiting as a member of the Fort Worth City Council by voting to give tax breaks to companies that used her title company. He specifically cited incentives to lure Cabela’s outdoor superstore to build near Fort Worth Alliance Airport.

And while they disagreed on abortion, gay marriage, expanding Medicaid and immigration issues, it was the arena of ethics that prompted the most personal exchanges.

Tuesday’s meeting in Dallas marked the last time the nominees will share a debate stage before the November election.
