ANOTHER ANONYMOUS CANE FOR THE BURTON COTTON GIN FESTIVAL

The Burton  Cotton Gin has received another  walking cane from Mr. A Nony Mous.

The cane will be auctioned off at the Annual Cotton Gin Festival on April 25th and 26th.

This is the 17th cane given to the Burton Cotton Gin Museum for its fundraising efforts.

While no one officially knows from whom the cane comes from now the tradition began with the late Oliver Whitener.

Whitener carved out hundreds of canes using a ‘ball in cage’ technique, then donated them to local organizations to help them raise money.

The donor placed a note on the door of the museum several weeks ago that read ‘Never fear, the cane is near.’

The cane was delivered Thursday.

The anonymous donor repeated a challenged made for last spring’s Cotton Gin Festival saying he or she will reveal their identity if $5500 is raised.

The Cotton Gin Festival raises funds for the upkeep of the old Burton Cotton Gin, the major industry for Burton for most of the 20th century.
