ASTROS’ TOY CANNON JIMMY WYNN DIES AT 78

Jimmy Wynn (1942-2020)

All-time Astros great Jimmy Wynn has died.

Wynn passed away Thursday at the age of 78 from undisclosed causes.

The Toy Cannon played 11 of his 15 MLB seasons in Houston and was named an All-Star in 1967.  He debuted with the Colt .45s in 1963.

Wynn finished his career with a .250 batting average, 291 homers and 964 RBIs. After his run with the Astros, he was a two-time All-Star with the Dodgers and played for the Braves, Yankees and Brewers.

Wynn came into the major leagues in 1963 and spent his first 11 seasons in Houston, first with the Colt .45s before the team changed its name to the Astros in 1964.

The 5-foot-9 slugger hit 20 homers five times and 30 homers twice during his time with the Astros--most spent in the cavernous Astrodome.  In 1970, he was the first player to hit a home run into the upper deck at the stadium.

He was beloved in the Houston community and was often seen interacting with fans and players at the Astrodome and Minute Maid Park over the years.

The Astros inducted him into their inaugural Hall of Fame class last year after retiring his No. 24 jersey in 2005.
