AUSTIN CO. COMMISSIONERS APPROVE FUNDS FOR ROAD REPAIRS

Austin County commissioners have agreed to use money from the General Fund to help repair damaged roads due to recent flooding.

The funds will be divided among the commissioners by road milage per precinct.

The county received damaging rains throughout most of May and into June, causing extensive damage to numerous county roads.

County Judge Tim Lapham says there were materials on hand for budgeted road projects, but those materials may have to be used for emergency road repairs.

Lapham says, if needed, the county could tap into some $6-million in CD’s which has been set aside for “a rainy day”.

County Auditor Billy Doherty says the county could safely divert about $2-million if needed.

  1. The roads is Austin County are some of the worst in Texas. Austin county needs a unit road system. Counties around Austin county have went to it and have a lot better roads. We need a unit road system I hope some starts up a movement to get one.

  2. County roads in Austin County that had been paved asphalt for over 20 years are now dirt. “Building up road base” they say… for the last 5 years? I hope Washington County isn’t following their example with the new dirt topping on Mustang & Old Chappell Hill Road. Heavy rain washes it away. Just fix the potholes. Please don’t be backward like Austin County.

    1. Millcreek Road was bad before Harvey due to not leaving the existing road base. They used a reclaimer and removed the asphalt. Then they repaved. Didn’t take the gophers long to destroy it since there was no base. Now since Harvey, most of us are wondering where Austin County’s Fema money went to?
