UPDATE: BALLOON RELEASE FOR MISSING HOUSTON GIRL CANCELLED

Update 5/17 @ 1:39 p.m.: Saturday's balloon release event has been cancelled.  Event organizers say it was due to negative feedback received from the public, with some people expressing concerns about the agricultural risks of releasing balloons into the atmosphere.

Original Story 5/16 @ 12:24 p.m.: A balloon release event has been set for this weekend for a missing 4-year-old Houston girl.

The event in recognition of Maleah Davis is slated for Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., in the courtyard by the Navasota Junior High School Gym.  The event is being planned by Navasota residents Salina Lindley and Tara Gamble, a pair of mothers with children close to Maleah’s age.

Nearly two weeks have passed since Davis went missing in Houston.  The case has received attention across the world and especially in the Brazos Valley, with similarities to the disappearances of Rayven Shields and Hazana Anderson.

Saturday's balloon release is open to the public. Those who attend are asked to bring balloons and wear pink, purple or white.

  1. How about evening event with candles.
The balloons do kill calves and other livestock that digest them.

  2. Do people think of Where the balloons go after they release them go. All over the ground and animals could die from eating them or getting tangled up in it. Also this is consider littering in my books

  3. Event has been canceled due to excessive complaints and tips from KWHI..Thanks

  4. Balloon releases are harmful to the environment, to wildlife and to domestic animals.

It only takes minutes for the litter from balloon releases to suffocate, choke or strangle an animal, or days to cause a painful death from starvation. Perhaps the balloon retailer has assured the organisers that the balloons are “biodegradable”. Would they scatter biodegradable food wrappers, drinks cartons or other packaging in the countryside?

  5. Although I too pray for his little girl and her family, and I also believe that Balloons are great at birthdays, weddings, graduations and more, but once they get loose, balloons can pose a threat to many animals.
Birds, turtles and other animals commonly mistake balloons for food, which can harm or even kill them.
In addition, many animals can become entangled in balloon strings, which can strangle them or hurt them , I would much rather see something like a Candlelight vigil or just see people come together to pray for this little girl. Balloons eventually come down to litter our earth as well as possible kill our wildlife.
