BARCODE ERROR CAUSES BRIEF SNAFU WITH AUSTIN CO. VOTING MACHINES

A small coding error with election equipment in Austin County briefly led to the ballots of less than a handful of voters listing incorrect political party information.

According to Austin County Tax Assessor Kim Rinn, the appointed election official for Austin County, four early voters came in to vote Tuesday morning between 8:15 and 8:29 a.m.

The voters checked in via a poll pad and declared their party affiliation.  This process generates a barcode associated with the voter’s precinct and party affiliation at the top of the ballot.  The voter then inserts the ballot inside the ExpressVote voting machine.

Upon inserting the ballot, the voters notified the election judge that their ballots had incorrect party affiliation.  The judge pulled the ballots, spoiled the affected ballots, and the known voters were manually processed by election staff.  Those voters were able to vote in the party of their choosing.

Rinn said she was told, upon contacting the equipment provider, the issue was caused by a coding error which was quickly resolved.  Rinn has reported the incident to the Secretary of State.
