BELLVILLE EDC PULLS PLUG ON XMAS LIGHTS

Bellville officials have temporarily pulled the plug on the city’s downtown Christmas lights.

The Bellville Economic Development Corporatoin decided to put a halt to the lights until needed repairs can be made.

The lights have burned nighty during the holiday season since the project began 18 years ago by the BEDC.

Board member Resse Ueckert says the lights have dimmed in some place and the droop in other, giving a bad impression of the city.

Board member Pat Burns said Downtown Bellville took charge of the lights because “the city thought there was too much liability for them to do it.”

Burns cited other cities such as Brenham, where the city maintains the downtown Christmas lights.

He suggested the BEDC could set aside $1500 annually for Downtown Bellville’s maintenance of the lights.  However, Ueckert says she thinks it’s more of a management problem than a monetary issue.
