BRENHAM, Texas — The Blinn College baseball team (9-3, 1-0) opened the conference season with a 3-1 win over Alvin Community College on Friday at Leroy Dreyer Field.
“We are happy that we won the first game at home and now have a chance to win our first conference series,” said Harvey McIntyre, Blinn head coach. “Gavin LaBruyere is a kid who does things right every single day and you know what you are going to get from him when he pitches. He helped us save our bullpen and gave us a chance to win these next two games.”
LaBruyere was solid on the mound to earn the win, only allowing one hit in seven scoreless innings, while striking out six. AJ Irvin earned the save after allowing just one run and three hits in two innings.
“It feels really good to be playing in conference and to come out with the win,” LaBruyere said. “I just went out there and threw strikes, and had a great defense behind me.”
Caden Homniok and Brett Minnich led Blinn’s offense with one run and one RBI apiece. Westley Schields went 2-for-3 and scored one run, while Tyler Russell drove in one run.
The Buccaneers took an early 3-0 lead in the first three innings and they held onto it for the remainder of the game.

Schields got things started in the first inning after landing in scoring position on an error and scoring on Minnich’s sacrifice fly for Blinn to lead 1-0.
Blinn jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second inning after Homniok led off with a single and later scored on Russell’s single.
Minnich scored the Buccaneers’ final run in the third inning after hitting a double and scoring on Homniok’s single.
Blinn held onto the 3-0 lead as LaBruyere kept Alvin off the board for the next four innings and Irvin came out of the bullpen to hold the Dolphins in the eighth inning. Alvin scored its only run in the top of the ninth inning before falling to Blinn.
Next, the Buccaneers will conclude the conference series against Alvin on the road on Saturday, Feb. 22, with a doubleheader starting at noon.
