BLINN-BRENHAM THEATRE DIRECTOR’S PLAY FEATURED IN NEW YORK

A Blinn College playwright will have his latest work featured this weekend in New York.

Brad Nies

Brenham Campus Theatre Arts Director Brad Nies will see his play “The Prisoners of Driscoll Street” premiering at the 22nd Annual Black Box New Play Festival in Brooklyn, New York.  The play is one of 11 premiering at the festival, and will be produced through Sunday.

The play is based on the Ice-Box Murders that happened in Houston, where an elderly couple living in the Montrose District was found murdered and stored in their refrigerator.

Police believed that their son had an altercation with his mother, killed the two, and disappeared. The play shows the interpretation of what that altercation was about.

Nies said he was inspired to write the play around ten years ago, after he read a book that was based on this story. He said he has never had a play produced outside of Texas, and is excited that a New York theatre has brought it in for production.

Following Sunday’s matinee, Nies will discuss the play in a talkback. The play is currently unpublished, but he hopes that with this weekend’s production, he’ll be able to publish it.

Nies has served as the Blinn-Brenham Theatre Director since 1990. Some of his writing production credits, which are also published plays, include “Haunting the House”, “The Boys from Houston Heights”, and “Teatime”.

This weekend’s play is being directed by Dominic Cuskern. More information can be found online at www.galleryplayers.com.
