BLINN COLLEGE MEN’S SOCCER PROGRAM READY TO COMPETE DURING INAUGURAL SEASON

Buccaneers enter the Region XIV conference with the desire and drive to contend

The Blinn College men’s soccer program will begin its inaugural season under first-year head coach Jorden Smith.
In March, Blinn announced the addition of men’s and women’s soccer for the Fall 2018 season.
Smith landed her first head coaching position for both the Blinn men’s and women’s soccer teams after spending the last two seasons as the head assistant for the Angelina College men’s and women’s soccer programs.
“My goals for both programs this season are to be competitive and build a foundation for the future,” Smith said. “The opportunity to play soccer at Blinn College has been huge for these players, and as their head coach, I want to make them better soccer players and better people.”
Midfielder Austin Dobbs (Tyler, Texas) is the only sophomore on the team this season. Dobbs played in 10 games for Jacksonville College last year before transferring to Blinn.
“He knows what to expect from our conference and is a leader for our freshman,” Smith said. “We are young, but are all working hard and have the drive and desire to be a top contender.”
Forwards Andres Amaro (Manchaca, Texas) and Omar Quintana (Conroe, Texas) will contribute to this season’s offense. Amaro was named his district’s Most Valuable Player an All-Central Texas team player while at James Bowie High School, while Quintana earned all-district honors for three seasons and all-region honors for two seasons at Caney Creek High School.
“We have some top players that are going to rise to the challenge and put the ball in the back of the net,” Smith said. “Our attacking players have a lot of knowledge of the game and will be able to execute.”
Johnny Girard (Wimberley, Texas) and Breitner Assafoga (Humble, Texas) will play as both forwards and midfielders. Girard was named his district’s Most Valuable Player while playing for Wimberley High School and picked up all-district honors for three seasons, while Assafoga earned all-district honors and went to the playoffs with Humble High School for three seasons.
David Jara (Hockley, Texas) and Alexis Ochoa (Conroe, Texas) will anchor the midfielder position. Jara won a state championship with Waller High School in 2017, while Ochoa was named his district’s Most Valuable Player and an all-state player at Conroe High School.
Nicolas Gonzales (Lake Jackson, Texas) and Connor Spiller (Houston, Texas) will alternate between the midfielder and defender positions. Gonzales was named his team’s Most Valuable Player and Midfielder of the County while playing for Brazoswood High School and Spiller won a state championship with St. Pius X High School in soccer and football.
Carson Powers (Flower Mound, Texas) will play a crucial role as a defender. He was the first player to sign with the Blinn College men’s soccer team after going to state semifinals with Flower Mound High School.
“We picked up great players on defense so have a very well-rounded team,” Smith said. “We are solid in the back line and have defenders that will execute throughout the game.”
Matt Honstein (Georgetown, Texas) has impressed at the goalkeeper position.
“He is a workhorse with good distribution skills who will go to bat for anyone on the team,” said Smith.
The Buccaneers will open the season with a conference game against Angelina College on Saturday, Aug. 25, at 4 p.m. at Rankin Field.
“Fans will see plenty of success from the men’s soccer team both on and off the field,” said Smith. “The men’s soccer program is going to be very competitive this season and I look forward to seeing what it accomplishes.”
