Blinn College men’s soccer launch program with 2-1 win over Angelina

Blinn College men’s soccer (1-0, 1-0) claimed the first win in program history after defeating Angelina College, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Rankin Field to open the season.

“It is exciting to claim my first victory as a head coach, but I am more excited for them than I am for myself,” said head coach Jorden Smith. “They worked hard, stayed with it and deserved the win.”

Freshman midfielder Breitner Assafoga scored both goals for the Buccaneers in the victory.

Assafoga gave the Buccaneers a 1-0 lead early in the game after scoring in the 10th minute.

Angelina managed to even the score 1-1 in the 28th minute, but never grabbed the lead throughout the game.

The Buccaneers and Roadrunners played a close second half until Breitner produced a second goal for Blinn in the 83rd minute to ensure the victory.

“It was an honor to be the first player to score in Blinn College men’s soccer history,” Breitner said. “We all worked as a team up and down the field and were able to hustle for the win.”

The Buccaneers will head on the road for a conference game against Jacksonville College on Thursday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.
