North Carolina native Aaron Kapiko will officially oversee Blinn’s eSports Program beginning July 1st.  College officials said in a release that Kapiko stood out from a large number of applicants from around the country due to his eSports experience.

According to Max Hibbs, Dean of Engineering, Computer Technology, and Innovation, Kapiko was a collegiate player and recently retired as a professional player of the digital collectible card game Hearthstone, where he was rated in the top 25 in the world.  He also served as the social media and brand manager for two large eSports organizations.

Hibbs said Kapiko, who earned his coaching certification from the National Association of eSports Coaches and Directors, has five years of coaching experience, including at the collegiate level.  Hibbs said he also has strong recruiting experience and has evaluated hundreds of recruits’ skills to determine their level of play.

Kapiko received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Science, Technology, and Society from North Carolina State University.  His career included two years as a wrestling coach at a high school in Raleigh, North Carolina.

In March, Blinn’s Board of Trustees authorized the launch of the new eSports teams on the Brenham and Bryan campuses.  Competition is slated to begin in the fall.
