BLINN-SCHULENBURG EXECUTIVE DEAN WINS NATIONAL DISSERTATION AWARD

  

The Executive Dean of Blinn College’s Schulenburg Campus has received a prestigious national award.

Dr. Becky Garlick’s dissertation was named the 2019 Dissertation of the Year by the National Council on Student Development (NCSD).  The NCSD gives the award annually to a doctoral dissertation that, according to the organization, “excels in making a substantial contribution to the literature and/or practice of community college student development”.

Dr. Garlick’s dissertation was on “Faculty Perceptions of the Implementation of Integrated Developmental Reading and Writing in a Texas Community College”.

The dissertation focused on the experiences and perceptions of community college faculty who have taught an integrated reading and writing course.  Among her findings was that using an integrated reading/writing approach “can help students transition into credit coursework more quickly than using separate courses”.

Dr. Garlick said she is pleased that her research can “assist other colleges in boosting their graduation, retention, or persistence rates”.
