BLINN’S SHEETS EARNS ALL-CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD
Blinn’s Sheets earns all-conference Player of the Year award
Roxanne Morris named Setter of the Year and Terry Gamble named Coach of the Year
Blinn College outside hitter Shelby Sheets (San Antonio) was named the Region XIV All-Conference Volleyball Player of the Year after leading the NJCAA in kills. In addition, Roxanne Morris (Goliad) was named conference Setter of the Year and head coach Terry Gamble was named Coach of the Year.
“It is an honor to be recognized as Coach of the Year, but it is a team award,” Gamble said. “Shelby and Roxanne are extremely deserving of their awards. Shelby is one of the best players in the country and Roxanne was our best all-around player because she did so much for us on the court.”
A sophomore, Sheets led the NJCAA in total kills (818) and kills per set (6.34) to help lead the Buccaneers to the conference championship. Sheets broke the Blinn record for kills in a season, and was named NJCAA Division I Volleyball Tachikara Offensive Player of the Week after recording 119 kills and a 0.28 hitting percentage in Week 5.
“It feels really good to be named the all-conference Player of the Year. I have to give credit to my team and amazing coaches because I couldn’t have done it without them,” Sheets said. “The best part of the season was growing such close relationships with the girls and being able to do something you love with the people you love. It makes it so much more meaningful.”
A sophomore, Morris led the Buccaneers with 674 assists, while also recording 297 digs and 187 kills in 125 sets.
“We’ve worked hard all season and always wanted to get better, so knowing that all of that hard work paid off is amazing,” Morris said. “I couldn’t have earned this without my teammates. We built a really tight bond this year and had great coaches, so it was a great all-around season.”
Gamble led the Buccaneers to a 29-10 overall record and 8-0 conference record to finish the season ranked No. 17. In addition, he picked up his 900th career win this season.
“The best part of coaching this team was getting to be around this great group of girls who listened and cared, which is what made this season fun,” Gamble said.
Joining Sheets and Morris with first-team all-conference honors were sophomore Samantha Boatman (Houston) and freshman Cheyenne Te’o (Laie, Hawaii), while freshman Taylor Henderson (Austin) earned second-team honors and freshman Jasmine McLemore (San Antonio) was named honorable mention.
Setter Boatman was second on the team with 620 assists, while also recording 236 digs in 127 sets. Outside hitter Te’o led Blinn with 404 digs, while recording 124 assists in 121 sets.
Middle blocker Henderson led Blinn with 114 blocks and was second on the team with 250 kills in 127 sets, while McLemore was second on the team with 93 blocks and fourth on the team with 135 kills.
