BOIL WATER NOTICE IN SOMERVILLE

The City of Somerville issued a boil water notice to residents this (Monday) afternoon.

Following a water leak after a fire hydrant was struck by a car, the city as a Community Public Water System is urging customers to boil their water before consumption, as required by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.  These warnings apply to water used for drinking, cooking, and ice making.

The city says, in order for all harmful bacteria and microbes to be destroyed, water should be brought to a strong boil and then boiled for two minutes, before cooling it for use.  Children, seniors and people with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable to the bacteria found in contaminated water.

People may also purchase bottled water or obtain water from another suitable source.  Public water system officials will notify customers once it is no longer necessary to boil water, or when the notice is no longer in effect.  The city posted the notice at around 1:15 p.m. today (Monday), and it asks customers to boil water for 24 hours, or until advised to do otherwise.

Anyone with questions can direct them to Dennis Moehlmann of Somerville Public Works, or Ben Griffin of Somerville City Hall, at 979-596-1122.
