BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL TO TAKE UP TALKS ON POSSIBLE CITY-WIDE MASK ORDER

The Brenham City Council will meet this (Thursday) afternoon to discuss and potentially implement a mandatory city-wide mask order.

According to the agenda posted for today's meeting, concerned citizens have sent in several emails and phone calls to the city, asking that Mayor Milton Tate mandate the wearing of masks.  Before taking any action or issuing an official order, Tate wishes to discuss the matter with the full city council.

The matter of facemasks—and whether or not a mask mandate should be put into place—has proven to be a hot topic among Brenham residents, with numerous comments on the KWHI website and social media pages, indicating either support of or opposition to the measure.

Councilmembers will also discuss the city’s current local disaster declaration, dated April 30th.

Also at today’s meeting, the council will go over several upcoming community events and possibly give direction on whether the city should continue planning for them.  Governor Greg Abbott’s executive order issued last week prohibits gatherings of over 100 people unless they are permitted by their local government.

Among the events to be discussed today include the Hot Nights, Cool Tunes summer concert series set for July 11th, 18th, 25th and August 1st; the Brenham Community Picnic planned for July 19th; Movies in the Park July 16th and 30th; and the Summer Sip and Art Walk scheduled for August 8th.

Councilmembers will also review a pair of planning items for the July 19th community picnic, concerning the temporary closure of state right-of-way and a noise variance.  The free event, to be held at Henderson Park, will feature free food and drinks, music with a DJ, door prizes, and community fellowship.

The council will also consider:

  • Adopting updated and revised aviation minimum standards for the Brenham Municipal Airport. The matter was tabled at the council’s last meeting to allow for further discussion.
  • A public hearing for an ordinance on its first reading granting a specific use permit to allow an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) in an R-2 Mixed Residential Use zoning district at 501 Crockett Street in the Woodlawn Heights Addition in Brenham.

The council will meet this afternoon at 1 p.m., at Brenham City Hall.

  1. I don’t understand why people don’t want to wear a mask. We are Americans and we have always done what is right for all of us. Wearing a mask even if it’s only while you shop is helping the good of us all. I am begging all of us to PLEASE put our Country before yourself

  2. There you go again City Council. You think you know what is best for all of us. You don’t! Sure, go ahead, participate in trying to strip us of our constitutional rights. You will all get voted out of office eventually. That’s my promise to you.

    1. Requiring one to wear a mask may be uncomfortable and seem unnecessary to armchair medics but I doubt unconstitutional. One cannot be denied life, liberty or property without due process but the government can provide for the general welfare of the people, especially in emergency. On my property, I can go maskless and enjoy my liberty but I cannot do whatever I want to on another’s property, like a private business property. The Bill of Rights of freedom of worship, speech, press, assembly, right to bear your arms, speedy trial, etc. ..important stuff….all seem to still be available to me. So, I read it, so be it.

  3. Masks should not be mandatory use them if you have existing health health conditions but they don’t keep the micro particals out and long term of wearing a mask is also a health risk I won’t wear one I’ll shop elsewhere

  4. I hope they impose a mask requirement. The one thing that has really disturbed me about the comments on these articles, Facebook, etc is just how many people, when you get right down to it, really have no real concern or interest in the health and safety of this community despite probably giving lip service to it.

The virus puts our community at risk, especially our doctors, nurses, and other vulnerable populations, and many of you can’t seem to be bothered to do the minimum or help. It’s shameful and frankly embarrassing

I hope our leaders will do what is right and require masks regardless of the backlash by selfish people.

  5. Go to Sealy, Bellville, La Grange, Fayetteville, Industry, Nee Ulm, Round Top, Burton, Chappell Hill, Navasota- none of these cities or their counties have issue mandates on masks and we should support their restaurants, stores and services!

  6. This article keeps being reposted saying people only want the masks. This is clearly a very controversial and political issue. The city council knows that. They are not only getting emails asking people to wear masks. There is no way with all the people who disagree that they are just being asked by Democrats to wear masks and not by Republicans to not wear masks. This is getting ridiculous. We have been waiting all week to see which side these guys are on …. freedom and individual rights or if they want to treat the residents here as prisoners. It’s about to be the Fourth, should be interested to see who on this council cares about actual rights of the people they were elected to represented.

  7. There are just as many people who DO NOT want this possible mask order in place!! You take away a person’s rights the minute something becomes mandated!! This isn’t about politics for us-this is about OUR SOVEREIGNTY!!

  8. Having any large events is adding fuel to the fire. It’s ridiculous when so many people have died

  9. Look at the real evidence of this plandemic. Even with falsified numbers by the CDC, the death rate is still under 1%. For those of you that wear masks, if it protects you like you believe it does.., why should those that don’t want to wear one have to do so? You’re protected, right?

This is unconstitutional and you will all be voted out.

First the mask, then the mandatory vaccine.

Wearing a mask does nothing but cause long term health issues. Sorry for caring about those with asthma, mental health problems and other health issues that this “mandatory” order will effect. Guess that makes me a “bad neighbor” according to many people in this community.

    1. Not only a bad neighbor, but very uneducated on the matter. Only thinking of yourself. Think about all the doctors and nurses that have died while taking care of people like you, who said this is isn’t real. Go ask their families. Do the right thing!

      1. Never said it wasn’t real. I said the numbers were inflated which is an absolute fact.

So caring about people makes me uneducated, selfish and a bad neighbor??

You may want to read over what you responded to again.

Christ could come back and make a stop in Brenham, TX …, and many in this community would probably reject him “for not wearing a mask.”

But, but but it’s for our safety…

      2. Right thing: you are putting MY health at risk forcing me to wear a mask you all celebrate Abbott ordering is to wear now.

My asthma, while controlled, affects my breathing enough masks long term can cause me to pass out.

If it triggers an attack, you’re forcing me to use extra money because I’ll use my medicine faster.

I normally add an extra 2-3 feet when I’m at places to help counter my no mask.

I’m fully educated on this matter too:

Studies are showing masks are INEFFECTIVE preventing the virus.

        MULTIPLE studies.

        Recoveries way up, deaths minimal.

THOSE two stats should be deciding things, not the natural expected rise in cases, made more prevalent because we simply put quarantined 10+ weeks too long.

So by living in real uneducated fear, you’re putting many of us in danger forcing everyone to wear masks.

That’s what’s selfish: masks should be a personal decision.
