BRENHAM MAIFEST BEGINS WITH KICK-OFF PICNIC WEDNESDAY

  

Activities for the 131st Brenham Maifest begin tonight (Wednesday).

The Maifest gets underway with the Friends of Maifest Kick-off Picnic, honoring the sponsors and volunteers who make Maifest possible.  The picnic will be held at Fireman’s Park at 6 p.m., and will feature a ribbon cutting and children’s Maipole dance.

KWHI will broadcast the picnic live on KWHI AM 1280, FM 101.7, and kwhi.com.

After that, a full weekend of festivities is in store at Fireman’s Park.  Maifest Association President Catherine Kenjura says it’s all in celebration of German tradition and local youth.

 

 

Activities open with the Mighty Thomas Carnival Thursday night.  Wristbands for the carnival are available for $22 on Thursday from 5 to 10 p.m., Friday from 4 to 11 p.m., and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. or from 5 to 11 p.m.

Tickets are still available for the Junior and Senior Maifest Coronation ceremonies, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, respectively.  This year’s Junior Royalty, Queen Dinah Grace Sue Neil and King John Paul Kenjura, will reign over the court of “It’s a Small World.”  Senior Maifest Royalty, Queen Clara Ashley Hamilton and King Carter Houston McVean, will reign over the court of “British Invasion.”  The coronation ceremonies will also be livestreamed at www.brenhammaifest.com.

Taking place Saturday morning is the Maifest parade through downtown Brenham, beginning at 10:30 a.m.  KWHI will broadcast the parade live starting at 10 a.m.  After the parade, guests can head over to the festival grounds for a variety of food trucks, a home brew contest, beer tasting, dance performances, and live music from The Oompahs and The Seven Dutchmen Orchestra.

After the Junior Coronation Friday night, Steven Marshall will perform on stage beginning at 8:30 p.m.  The Brown Sugar Band will perform at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, after the Senior Coronation.

Admission to the festival grounds is free.  Coronation tickets are only being sold online this year, and are limited to 75 percent capacity.
