A Brenham native, who served as the president of a Florida college, has died.

Dr. William A. Seeker, the long-time president at College of the Florida Keys, died July first at the age of 81.

Bill Seeker served at the president of the southernmost college in the United States from 1979 through 2007.

A self-described “country bumpkin,” Seeker grew up in a small house on a dirt road in rural Brenham.   The grandson of German immigrants, his father was a laborer and his mother was a nurses’ attendant.

He graduated from Brenham High School in 1956, Texas A&M in 1960, and served as a U.S. Army paratrooper for seven years.

A part of the Florida Keys campus is named for Seeker and honors his contributions to the college.

He recently spoke of brushing elbows with the likes of Tennessee Williams--the namesake of the College’s Fine Arts Center, and singer Jimmy Buffett, who contributed to the college.  Seeker was also once named the Keys “Most Eligible Bachelor”.

The College will hold a Celebration of Life in memory of Dr. William Seeker on Monday, July 13 at 6 p.m. in the courtyard of the William A. Seeker/Key West Campus. It will be broadcast live on the College’s Facebook page.
