BRENHAM P.D. OFFERS TIPS TO GUARD AGAINST BANK JUGGING

Police are providing of tips aimed at protecting citizens against “bank jugging” after a recent incident occurred in Brenham.

Bank jugging is when suspects watch financial institutions, looking for potential victims. When a victim is identified, the suspect will follow the person hoping for an opportunity to steal the cash.

Police Chief Craig Goodman says while this type of criminal activity is more common in the Houston area, it has unfortunately returned to Brenham.

Goodman says there are a number of ways citizens can protect themselves. He recommends:

  • Increasing your level of awareness.
  • Only transport large sums of money when necessary
  • Be unpredictable and alter what you do
  • When transporting large sums of cash, go directly from the financial institution to the location where the money will be immediately secured. Don't make any unnecessary stops
  • If you see suspicious activity or someone acting suspiciously, remain calm and immediately call 911
  • If you are being followed, go to a public location and remain on the telephone with Washington County 911 until law enforcement officers arrive. Ideally, travel to a public safety location like the police station or sheriff's office
  • Avoid confronting any suspect. Be a good witness but noting physical features of a suspect and information about their vehicle

Goodman says area law enforcement agencies are working together to identify suspects to prevent future bank jugging crimes. As always, the police department asks citizens to report suspicious activities and most importantly- stay safe.
