BRENHAM PARKS AND REC. BOARD RECOMMENDS BANNING TOBACCO IN PARKS

Members of the Brenham Parks and Recreation Advisory Board are in favor of tighter restrictions on tobacco in city parks and facilities.

The board made a recommendation at its meeting Wednesday to amend a chapter of city ordinance in order to establish parks and public facilities as tobacco-free environments.

Public Works Director Dane Rau said this recommendation includes banning smoking, tobacco, and e-cigarettes in order to create a “tobacco-free park system”.  He stated board members are considering the quality of air and the enjoyment families have at parks and facilities, as well as their cleanliness.

Rau reiterated that this is just a recommendation, which will go before the city council at a future date.

The board also named member Bill Betts as chairperson, and Lewis Mendoza as vice chairperson.  It also introduced new members Lee Chalmers, Andrea Fischer, and Matthew Wehring.

The board also held work session on an aquatic therapy class to potentially be held at the Blue Bell Aquatic Center.  The city will continue discussion with the private business interested in using the Aquatic Center’s therapy pool.  Rau said the business and city will begin negotiation on a contract and pool rental rates.

  1. I thinks that this is unnecessary, and is also another right being taken away. In an open park, no one will be affected by second hand smoke. I am not a smoker, but have been in the distant past.
