BRENHAM POLICEMAN ASSAULTED

A woman’s call for help in an early morning assault Tuesday led to a confrontation between a Brenham police officer and a possibly mentally ill suspect. Brenham police reports say that Cpl. Richard Bobbitt responded to the 300 block of West Main at about 6:32 Tuesday morning when he received an assault call. Once at the scene Bobbitt was unable to find anyone at the business, Brenham  Office Supply.. Officer Hunter Andreas also came to the scene and said he was able to see some subjects on West Vulcan Street. Bobbitt headed in that direction and when a woman saw his unit, she started running away. He followed the woman to a residence directly behind the business. He told the woman to come to his patrol car when he saw two men approach him. He asked the woman to come to his car but told the two men to stay away. One of the men approached Bobbitt and struck him in the face. The officers were able to subdue this suspect and spoke with the other man. The man told the officers he believed the assailant was mentally ill and that he assaulted the woman at the business. Bobbitt was able to find the victim while other officers transported the suspect to the Washington County Jail. The woman was a worker at the Brenham Office Supply and had just come to work when the suspect came to her, demanded identification and struck her in the face. Forty-three year old Joseph Graves of Brenham was arrested for assault on a public servant, and assault causing bodily injury.
