BRENHAM SCHOOL BOARD HEARS LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Brenham School Superintendent Dr. Walter Jackson presented his update on the current Texas Legislative session during Monday evening’s school board meeting.  Jackson stated that of the 911 bills filed by the deadline, 122 deal with the Texas Education Code and with 70 days left in the session, there could still be a lot of changes and additions to them.  Jackson said that two bills to keep an eye on are House Bill 3, which would add $9 billion in state funding to school districts, and Senate Bill 4, which is the school funding bill from the Senate, which adds funding for pre-kindergarten schooling.

Paul Aschenbeck, Assistant Superintendent of Operations, gave the board an update on safety and security measures in the district.  He said the security vestibule has been completed at the Early Childhood Learning Center and Brenham Jr. High and should be completed this week at Brenham Elementary.  The vestibule at Krause Elementary has been updated and the one at the High School is in progress.  The safety vestibules at Alton Elementary and Brenham Middle School were already in place, requiring any visitor to the campus to be buzzed in.  Aschenbeck also noted that many new security cameras have been added across the district and that a number of key doors have been fitted with electronic locks that keep track of exactly who entered and exited.

In other action, trustees approved canceling the Brenham School Board Election for May 4th since only the incumbents filed for the election.  Those incumbents are Mark Schneider for Position One, Michael Altman for Position Two, Susan Jenkins for Position Three, and Kelvin Raven for Position Four.

The school board presented this month’s “You Make a Difference Award” to Supreme Donuts and Texas Farm Bureau Insurance for their donation of donuts and muffins.  This year, 130 dozen donuts and muffins were handed out across the district for Muffins with Moms and Donuts with Dads events during Texas Public School Week.
