BRENHAM SCHOOL BOARD TO REVIEW GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

The Brenham School Board will have yet another look at the new high school graduation requirements when they hold their regular meeting Monday night at the high school.

They will be getting an update on House Bill Five,  a measure passed in last year’s session of the state legislature that caused sparked these changes.  The Board will be hearing an update from the Career and Technology  Education.  The new requirements would give students who don’t necessarily want or need to go to college.  The requirements reduced the number of standardized tests from 15 to 5 and students can choose from four ‘endorsements’ or specified courses to help students get through high school.  Assistant BISD Supt. Byron McAdams says these new requirements will affect the incoming class of ninth graders, allowing the more flexibility or courses and a career path.

The requirements have students take four credits from the areas of arts and humanities, business and industry, public service, multidisciplinary or STEM, science, technology, engineering and math.

The Board will also get an update on the ‘Capturing Kids Hearts staff training proposal.

This is a proposal from the Flippen Group.  McAdams says this is part of the Game Changers program.  He says Game Changers is to encourage students to stay in school and the Capturing Kids Hearts program is to help teachers better relate to the students.

The construction of the new Alton Elementary School and the renovations at the Middle School are in their stretch run.  The Board will be looking a purchase order contracts for furniture, fixtures and equipment.

The Brenham School Board meets Monday at six at the High School.
